My Secret

*inhale, exhale*

I'm getting ready to share a secret with you.  A big one.

Before I do, know I've put a lot of thought into this.  I've read advice about how much personal information to share on ones blog.  Believe me, I have my limits.  I'm not going to rant about how much is in our bank account or tell you what hubby and I discussed last night.  I'm not going to share the personal conversation I had with my sibling or reveal the thought that made me cry the other day.

But I am going to test my vulnerability.  I want to share things with you - some anonymous readers, some I know quite well - that may touch your life as well.  I want to share my humanity in hopes that we may each feel more comfortable in doing so as the days pass on.

One point of this blog is Life UNITY - unifying the divine and the human aspects of life.  I can share with you the divine...all the giggles and creative work and photographic smiles of my children, but my life is not a glossy magazine spread.  I would suppose yours isn't either.  I want to celebrate all that IS...the glossy and the old, torn, wrinkled and discarded.

(Note: The courage to post this as well as the idea was inspired by Connie's Belly Love.)

******

Two days ago, while riding in the car while my hubby drove, I was getting a little tense.  Usually it is because of his driving (love you, dear!), but this time I knew it was something different.  I didn't want to admit it, but I knew what it was.  I revealed it to myself that day and now I reveal it to you:

I hold it in.

No, not the secret, and no, not a toot (hah - please tell me you didn't think THAT was my secret!).....my stomachMy stomach, the flab around it, and everything that it symbolizes.

I hold in the weight that might otherwise push against my waistband.
I hold in the fear of judgment I'm certain would follow from others looking at the pudge.
I hold in my own disappointments with myself feeling that somehow, I should be able to tighten that up if ONLY I had the discipline.
I hold in my own judgments of others I see walking around - even though I yearn and cry not to, I still judge.
I hold in my expression believing the facade is more desirable, more powerful.

I hold it all in.

The rest of that day (and each day since), I made it a point to let it go.  How odd it is, but I had emotions flooding in as I sat there feeling the seat belt across my newly-expanded middle.  How could I not have worked out this morning?  How could I be so lazy?  This looks horrible...I need new clothes.

No one else was safe, either, as I felt myself getting angry or sad over the silliest things that my husband or the kids would do or say.

Walking around was even harder.  I have practiced holding it in since the beginning of my school days - even when there was no flab there to hold in - ever since I became aware that someone might be looking or judging.  It is instinct to just tighten and whewp - in the pudge goes.

Ah, but I knew there would be rewards too.

As terrified as I was that EVERYONE was noticing the flab hanging out around my middle, I started to feel a bit softer, a bit more gentle, a bit - dare I say it - at peace.  Smiles came more naturally to my face and were passed along to strangers.  Honestly!  Lest you think that the Sound of Music score was playing behind me while birds tweeted around with ribbons, know that I still got frustrated with the kids and depressed that a shirt wouldn't fit and so on.  Change isn't that easy.

But in the process of letting my instinctual suck-it-in response go, I also let go of just an eensy bit of fear and a lot of unnecessary tension.  Guess what?  No one pointed and laughed.  I didn't get whistled at but I would assume that most women walking around with two kids and their husband in an outlet mall don't get cat calls.  That's cool.  If only for fleeting seconds, my fear of being judged for whatever my body looks like disappeared.  THAT is a freeing sensation, my friends.

Of course, since the body and mind are intricately connected, I also let go of that tension in my core...my sacral chakra (Note: check out more information on this chakra here (found after a Google search...I claim no association with that link).  A description of chakras is a whole other post, but suffice to say for now this area relates to, among other things, emotions and creative expression!! Hmmm.).

Like water that is held back by a dam, those more energetic aspects (emotions, memories, etc.) flooded out when the tension was released.  The more I play with the faucet (water on, water off, water on....wax on, wax off, wax on - sorry, flashback.  I digress.), the more of the STUFF I held in gets released.  The more that is released, the freer I am.

And baby, I wanna be FREE.
FREE TO BE ME.

So taking direction from other wonderful beings in the blog world who have declared their intentions by writing it clearly on their body, and taking inspiration from Connie's Belly Love, I am taking one more HUGE GIANT STUPENDOUS leap.

There are some people who read this blog of whom I am terrified seeing this picture.  Those who will probably not comment but see the photo and think, EWWW!  Of you, I am still afraid.  I want you to like me - I want to be attractive in every way possible - fake or not.

Others, ...eh.  To those, it is no big deal or my soul is already known.  The packaging doesn't matter.  It is you who allows me space to share.

Some of you know which side you fall on.

To those in the first group, consider this an ultimate gift of my true self.  May that be more attractive than what my clothes keep hidden.  May I eventually accept myself whether or not others do.

~I have gone back and forth on even posting this several times.
I am almost crying as I add the photos!
I used to have a FLAT tummy - even a belly ring!
Two kids and no surgeries later, here I stand.~

So why do this?  Because I need to.

Because THIS is one huge commitment to admitting to myself who I really am, to admitting to the "world" who I really am, to being able to LIVE that life, to being able to LET GO OF MY SECRET and ALL OF THAT CRAP THAT I'M HOLDING IN.  It's no longer serving me.

I declare it to myself (and will continue doing so until I believe it), and I declare it to all who read this:

I love my body.
All of it.

I will continue to work on my strength - that which will tighten the physical core and that which will release my fears about it.      Both are important.

May we ALL find the strength to embrace our beauty...every divine drop, every sensuous curve, every story-filled wrinkle, every emotion-laden vulnerability.

NAMASTE.
(The divine in me sees and celebrates the divine within you.)

Laundry and the Meditation Cushion

I had a revelation today while pulling clothes out of the dryer.

Yup, ladies and gentlemen (are there any gentlemen who read this?!), while doing laundry.

My mind had been filled with all of the countless things I had to do before I could do...well, the things I had to do.  The garage needs to be cleared out so the kids can have a shady area to play.  (We can't even pull our cars in there right now.)  We need to figure out where the cra...stuff is going to go before it can be cleaned out.  I have to clear a path to my chair before I can find my sketching materials again.  I have to fold these clothes before I can switch the ones from the washer (which have already been in there a day) into the dryer. And so on.

A day or so ago, I had determined that one of my goals for this summer (and I will repeat this later) is to get on top of things and then stay on top.  (I can hear my hubby snickering in the background.)  Seriously, I want to get to each and every corner and clear out those things that get neglected because once we are done cleaning the kitchen countertop and the kids rooms (AGAIN) we are too tired to tackle the corner.

So what was the revelation?  That NOW is the only time things can be done.  Deep, no?

NOW is the only time things can be done.

I don't mean that if dinner doesn't get made RIGHT NOW that my family will starve.

I mean that "right now" is the only time that exists...that piling up mail for "later", stepping over the clothes that I'll deal with "tomorrow", and purchasing more books to read for "when I have time" is pointless.

Sooner or later, "Tomorrow,", "Later", and "When I Have Time" will become "NOW"...the only point at which I can get stuff done.

I have a problem.  I'm piling crap on top of crap.  I live my life as if there will always be a better time to do something, that tomorrow there will be free time to deal with "it".  The donation pleas and camp notifications pile up because I trick myself into thinking I'll deal with the papers during the evening hours.  That time never comes.

The clothes that the kids have grown out of and the toys that are still perfectly useful but no longer age-appropriate pile up in the garage because I keep thinking I'll have a garage sale and be able to use the money for something useful.  I believe we have things that have been in there since we moved in.

I have papers, notes, cards, banners, and pretty much anything else than can be saved from the past 5 years (in particular), thinking that I'm going to put together an awesome baby book and a scrapbook from our vacations and wall art for the kids from their baby photos.  I think it is more likely that these things will crumble from age then end up in a beautiful homemade work of art.

So my goal for now?

To take care of everything Now.  I don't mean I'm going to tackle the garage and the art area and the kids clothes and the laundry and my sketching and blah blah right now.  No thanks.

I mean when something comes up, I'm going to deal with it.  In between wiping up the milk and cheerios and sorting through the mail, I vow not to take on any more large projects or choosing to bring in any more things-to-do.  When I HONESTLY look at it all, I have more than what I can handle on my plate...more "to-do's" than I can possibly do, more inspiring books & websites than I can possibly absorb, more clutter than I could possibly ever sell or use.

(This has included not buying any books for myself at Half Price Books and passing on an online class I really wanted to join.  This is NOT going to be easy.  I'm tearing up a bit right now thinking about not buying another book for awhile.  *Sniff*)

This also means life is going to be pleasantly BUSY and that I'll be
moving at a much DIFFERENT PACE...i.e. SLOWER.

It is easy to imagine I have all sorts of free time.  And I do.  But that "free time" is built upon oodles of To-Do-dles.  (Tee hee)  The time is only free, the house only "clean" because of what is shoved in the corners and assigned to do "later".

And life gets more and more out of control as I keep thinking there is any time but now to deal with my life.

Remember the phrase I've been running with....How I Do One Thing Is How I Do Everything?

I have not sat my toosh on a meditation cushion in months.  I keep pushing it aside....just like the piles of laundry.  I push each part of my life a little further aside to make room for More or Different.

So right here, right now, I set my intention to Just Do It.

To meditate, do my yoga, to do the laundry, to do the sketching and to play with the kids.

And lest you worry about me (you kind being), know that all of this is done not by stressing and trying to cram more into each moment, but by moving at a different pace..the pace of awareness & intention

I am going to have to give up some television time.  I'm going to have to accept that I may not move as quickly on Suzi's class and that the Artistic Mother projects may not get done until the end of the summer.  And THAT'S OK!

I am going to breathe and move and be for right here, right now.

When my kids call for my attention, I intend on giving it to them even if it means pausing the video lesson online.  I intend on not stepping over any lost sock or lonely lego, but pausing in my journey to help it find its home.

It is going to be hard, this I know.

But it could also be the start of something transformative and beautiful.  It's that on which I focus.

*********

On a less deep note (sorta), Danielle LaPorte's The Firestarter Sessions & Kelly Rae Roberts' Flying Lessons classes are TRANSFORMING me.  (I know I just used that word.  It's a cool word.)   I don't think I'm teasing you when I ask you to watch for BIG BIG things coming soon.

********

On an even less deep note, today is our son's last day of Kindergarten!  How odd that we will soon have a child who is beginning his journey on the numeric steps of education (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.).  I hope to post photos of pre- and post- school soon.

Ok....breathe.  be.  now.

Updates

Life is simply, indescribably, deliciously beautiful.  (Even when it doesn't feel that way.)

Deep Thoughts

Energy Follows Awareness.

~

How I do one thing is how I do all things.

~

These two simple but profoundly complex statements have been swirling around me non-stop recently.  I won't elaborate (that's a whole other post I'm hoping to do) but it's safe to say they are altering every journey I am on.

Think about them and test them out in your own life....

What's Keeping Me Busy

* Suzi Blu's The Goddess & The Poet class and all of the resulting sketching/coloring/painting.  Learning to draw and create mixed media art with a uniquely fascinating individual....fun stuff!

* Kelly Rae Robert's Flying Lessons (starts today!).

* Danielle LaPorte's Firestarter Sessions.  I was so unbelievably fortunate to get the "Pay What You Can" offer but, after only reading through one page, am already considering how I'm going to pay the full price.  Seriously.  I believe it is THAT worth it.

* Trudy Callahan's Artistic Mother's Group (based on Shona Cole's book, The Artistic Mother).  I am so far behind on this it isn't funny.  But the spirit of being an Artistic Mother is alive and well within me AND I am determined to finish up the projects at some point.

* Connie's Art Journal Love Letters.  I finished the class a bit ago but keep popping in to refresh (there is SO much juicy inspiration!) and take part in the awesome chats.

*Running!  Yep, I'm still going - albeit at a much different pace.  I'm only running 3 or so times a week now and at an average of 2.5 miles / run.  But I LOVE it.

* Planning out our summer.  Our son finishes up Kindergarten this week (*sniff*!!) and I am faced with figuring out how to educate, entertain, and show my undying love to my two kiddos each and every day...all day long...while still getting all of the above accomplished.  We've gotten a few workbooks from Half Price Books & I'm working on a schedule to make sure we all don't go crazy!

(Yeah, perhaps I've taken on a bit too much.  Oh well.  That's how I roll.)

Things You Should Check Out

* The guest stories that Kathy (Everyday Kathy) & Rachel (Rachel Awes) have shared at Our Stories...beautiful ladies honestly sharing their selves. (I have more yet to be posted...)

* Yet another weekly giveaway at Sleeping Dogs Studio.  They do AMAZING work (frames, cards, etc) and invite guest artists as well for weekly giveaways.  (That means Free.  You get something for Free.  It is possible!)  This weeks giveaway is a gorgeous pair of earrings.  I don't understand HOW, but the comments are very few on these giveaways (as low as ONE)...so your chances of winning are OUTSTANDING.  (You won't even have me to compete with: I've won TWICE so in fairness to others am refraining from entering for awhile.  It's very hard.)

* It's another Pay What You Can!  The generous Carmen Torbus is offering a Pay What You Can WEEKEND (until Monday, May 31st) for her Spill It Revisited online workshop

I know I'm forgetting something.  But a peanut-butter-and-jelly-smeared-face is calling for my attention. (My daughter's.  My hubby can take care of his own face.)

~

I'm away from most of my pictures but always like to include something in my posts.  And, because I told a few people I'd share it...and because it happens to still be on this camera card.....

We watched our wedding video (which I just had converted to DVD after 10 years...yep, we're old enough to have NO digital records of our wedding!) the other night.  The kids saw me in the wedding dress and commented they'd like to see me "look like that again".  (No offense taken, but it's going into the "comments-that-will-be-brought-up-when-you-are-older" file.)

So I pulled out the ol' wedding dress (which is horribly stained and we have no idea from what).  Guess what?  Still fits!

We may be getting rid of it soon so I thought I'd take a few last photos.  I don't even have my editing software on this computer to make the photos better.

Wrinkly & stained (the dress...NOT me...), but here ya go:

Blushing bride?  Not exactly.

Have a beautiful Memorial Day weekend.

Ten Years and Counting

From Then

Until Now

(yeah, the only photos we have of us recently are from the mini marathon!! hah!)

And each day after
We celebrate a love that has allowed us
to become "us"
and yet remain individuals...
and to find a growing
peace and constantly
renewed energy amidst it all.

To my husband - Happy 10th Anniversary.

Unexpected Delay

I know I promised far more information...and I actually have a blog post typed up and ready to go.

Apparently, my computer has other ideas.  (Seriously.  I know it has a mind of its own.  It is snickering right now as I type this.)

Adobe Photoshop keeps locking up every time I try to edit a photo so I'm going to keep begging and pleading until it lets me edit a few and add them to the aforementioned post.

Until then, please enjoy this awesome wisdom that was sent to me months ago.
